Artists discuss the 13 records that shaped their lives

3. Vladimir CosmaLa Chèvre

I love Vladimir Cosma, and the best show I ever saw in my life was a show of his, playing all the soundtracks he did. This guy is a great composer – a great, great composer. I guess one of the best in the world; such rich chords, such beautiful melodies, very joyful. Le Chèvre was a very successful comedy movie in France, it was a big success, and everybody in France knows this music. It’s just a soundtrack but everybody knows this one because the composition is so good and it’s like the perfect spirit for comedy; it’s kind of fun, but at the same time it’s touching – it can touch your heart. I love that. It was possible for Vladimir Cosma to put different emotions into the same melody; at the same time you can be fun and serious. With him I discovered that the songs aren’t just sad or happy, the music is so good he can choose exactly what sensation he wants to give. I think that’s why he did so many soundtracks, because he understood exactly how to manage music for a result. The film is really good, it’s like an old French comedy, but it’s still very good – Gérard Depardieu is great.
