Artists discuss the 13 records that shaped their lives

10. Cro-MagsThe Age Of Quarrel

It’s not as well known as Reign In Blood or Master Of Puppets but for sheer brutality it doesn’t get much heavier than the Cro-Mags. They were a band that I had seen so many times. At CBGB’s I fell in love with them the first time I saw them. There was such a brutality and a heaviness to this band. They just fucking kicked ass. They were the opposite of the Crumbsuckers. They didn’t need to have shredders on guitar to rip my head off. This was just sheer force of will. And they were great songwriters, with a great sense of anthemic, hardcore songs. There’s certainly a metal undertone on this record but this was definitely more hardcore than metal. You wanna hear a fucking brutal record? Listen to this. It holds up today. You put on ‘We Gotta Know’ and if the intro to that song doesn’t make you want to fucking throw a chair through a window then there’s something wrong with you. You’re dead inside.
