Baker's Dozen

Artists discuss the 13 records that shaped their lives

This is another song I discovered via a 90s popstar. Madonna covered it with Massive Attack producing it. It’s really, really quite good. But then I heard the original and it’s completely different, and actually beautiful. I love this remix. Normally remixes make some classic songs worse, but this makes it better because it highlights his voice, which I think is the single best voice in the history of music. If you strip away the music, you really hear it. And it’s such a beautiful song, he was amazing – and so handsome as well. He just had everything. Apparently he recorded the vocals on this whilst lying on his back on the back of a sofa. I don’t think that shows. Well, maybe it does. I mean, he was effortless in his employment of his talent.
