8. Sister NancyOne Two
Sister Nancy is one of my favourites, because she’s a woman in that space – and there’s not that many. What I love about the older dancehall ladies is that nowadays it’s often very sexualised – but they didn’t even do all that: Sister Nancy, Sister Carol, they didn’t do all that, so that’s one thing I love and identify with because it’s really just about the music for me too, and these ladies showed how that’s done. And Sister Nancy’s voice is so dope. I could identify with that because it’s like how I sing – it’s very nasal and very tonal. It’s high, it’s very feminine but also very tough and cool. Also her rhythms are sick. I love all the Jamaican ladies, they use their voices like an instrument and make all these cool sounds. Like Shelly Thunder’s song, ‘Kuff’.
