Baker's Dozen

Artists discuss the 13 records that shaped their lives

He’s just hugely influential, and he’s such a weirdo. What a genius! What’s so cool about Lee Perry is – once again – he’s a pioneer. The way that he used technology to create a genre, to create the dub sound, the echo – that influenced the whole world! A lot of punk bands (and I know I’m being like ‘punk punk punk’), like the Clash and others, they liked what Lee Perry was doing because it sounded so raw. He just really shaped Jamaican music, he tapped into what they had going and really shaped it and named it and claimed it. He’s just such a brilliant and strange brain. A genius.
