Artists discuss the 13 records that shaped their lives

12. Talking HeadsSpeaking In Tongues

I also got this through Columbia House. David Byrne is one of my all-time favourites-  the art of his stage-show and his holistic vision. I think that musically we tap into a lot of the same themes. He’s been a really big supporter, too – one time I was performing a small warm-up show, it must have been for Master Of My Make-Believe because I remember Karen O was onstage with me. And I didn’t know that he came to the show, until I got an email and it said, "That was one of the best shows I’ve ever seen – David". And I just thought, ‘Oh cool, David who?’, until I saw the email signature…just David Byrne! It was a life goal, and since then I’ve done a collaboration with him, I played a tribute concert for him at Carnegie Hall. ‘This Must Be The Place’ is one of my favourite favourites. It’s a love song, but there’s not one trite lyric – and do you know how hard it is to write a love song that’s not trite? It’s so personal and beautiful and original.
