Artists discuss the 13 records that shaped their lives

10. MadnessOne Step Beyond

At that time I was buying things like The Specials, Madness, Selecter and I remember doing that dance to ‘One Step Beyond’ – which I can still proudly do. It reminds me of being around 13/14 and being a mod, dressing in my parker, my tonic suit, my loafers, my white socks, my Fred Perry.

I was a massive fan of Quadrophenia but I was too young to go and see that when it first came out but I really wanted to. And my dad was a massive fan of The Who, so I was too. I think it was an 18 and I was only about 14 at the time so my mum put make up on me, I put a pair of high heels on and put rollers in my hair and I got in. When that scene came on when they’re both in bath and you can see their doo-dah’s I remember my dad covering my eyes!

So I remember that whole era of being 13/14 and all my mates having parties; when the mums and dads would go away for the weekends and we’d have parties and do silly mod dances and my boyfriends would have silly pork pie hats. It was just a stage I went through.
