Baker's Dozen

Artists discuss the 13 records that shaped their lives

12. YesThe Yes Album

Not so surprising, perhaps? I was turned onto this by a good friend back in the day when Yes were just breaking. Of course I loved Chris Squire’s incredible bass…and am still a huge fan. Quite amazing. But Yes provided an incredible array of intricate arrangements and a musicality beyond belief. They are often knocked for being too complex but I don’t agree. There is a simplicity and elegance to the songs. I always found them both accessible and adventurous.

Selected in other Baker’s Dozens: Trevor Horn, Belle and Sebastian
