Artists discuss the 13 records that shaped their lives

11. FaustFaust So Far

Like Can, Faust were obviously influenced by Stockhausen and you can hear this in the tape manipulations which came from the elektronische music. All of these things have labels nowadays but I don’t think they had them at the time; it was just wilful experimentation in the studio. Again they used the studio as an instrument. Faust had their own studio on a farm, Uwe Nettelbeck would take all their recordings and sounds and make this collage out of it. Can very much had that aesthetic as well but they were a lot more musical and psychedelic, they took forms and stretched them. Faust were much more into the agitation of sound and abrupt editing and harsh juxtaposition. Another truly great band who stretched boundaries. They constantly progressed and challenged themselves. They weren’t interested in commercial success and they weren’t scared of challenging themselves. What they did was purely for the joy of creating sounds that had never been heard before.
