This one is super interesting, because it almost concretely takes Freddie Hubbard’s quintet and injects it into what seems almost like an avant-garde theatre piece. I would love to see what this would look like in a live context or performed on stage, you know? Technically it’s an Ilhan Mimaroğlu album, he’s the composer. But the fact that he worked with Freddie Hubbard and injected what was happening in contemporary jazz into this, it was a new form. And I’m gonna say this over and over again, but it was real. For me it was really compelling, because the first time I heard this record, I had never heard anything remotely like it. At the time, there were probably other things that were working in similar ways. And you hear the cross pollination of what people would term as genres, but at the end of the day, everything is working together in a way that’s pushing it forward.
