4. Kathryn JosephBones You Have Thrown Me And Blood I’ve Spilled
I remember thinking I was coming quite late to this, but it was definitely before she won the Scottish Album of the Year [SAY] Award last year. I picked it up and thought it was an incredible record. Just honest and brutal and beautiful. Like Kathryn.
As a collection, this album works so well. It flows really well. I would say it takes you on a journey, but it basically drops you down a well, and then leaves you there do die, you know? [Laughs] Kathryn and I have become really close, she’s incredibly funny, and yet: that music. The first time I saw her play, I was in tears. You can tell when people aren’t being real, aren’t being honest.
I think we agreed to work with each other [on ‘The Dog’ from Telling The Trees] at that gig. I think Marcus [Mackay, producer] plays a similar role to Kathryn as Paul [Savage] does to me: he really understands the music and is sympathetic towards it, which is really important. When Kathryn got longlisted for the SAY Award, I knew she was going to win. Sometimes you get these albums that are just there, and there’s nothing like them.
