Baker's Dozen

Artists discuss the 13 records that shaped their lives

7. Mobb DeepThe Infamous

This album is good, but it has more to do with where I was in life at the time. Although not as bad, that’s the kind of life I was on in those days. A track like ‘Shook Ones Pt. 2’ is the best example. It sounds like the roads. I’ll listen to the album now and I still get chills, but I don’t lead that kind of life anymore which is even sweeter. In my eyes, Prodigy wasn’t even that technically good, but the rappers knew that he does what he’s saying. A lot of rapping is the bravado so if you have a little bit of realness, you’re nice, and Mobb Deep are very real. They were always disappearing as well; they did music but still did road, so they would vanish for six months and then come back.

Selected in other Baker’s Dozens: East Man, John Stanier, Slackk,
