Baker's Dozen

Artists discuss the 13 records that shaped their lives

10. Neu!Neu! ’75

Obviously I was very familiar with the first two Neu! albums then this one just appeared and it was almost as if they’d refined what they were doing a little bit. On the first two Neu! albums they were just putting the same track on at a different speed because they didn’t have enough material, but with Neu! ’75 it’s almost as if they’ve invented punk. If you listen to ‘After Eight’ or ‘Hero’ they’re very punky-sounding and this is 1975. Then you’ve got things like ‘E-Musik’, which is almost typical Krautrock with the percussive thing going on there. I didn’t even know this was coming out. I spotted it in a record shop, took it home and played it and 40 years later I’m still playing it. It was an important record.
