Artists discuss the 13 records that shaped their lives

2. PrincePurple Rain

I still remember the day the movie came out. I was about 11 and me and some friends went down to the movie theatre. Some of the guys with us were 17 or 18, so we were able to get in.

We caught the second show, so as we came in the first show was just ending and I noticed something. Whenever ‘Purple Rain’ plays, the room goes quiet. It’s pure silence every time. When we walked in, it was on the part when it plays. Then when we watched the movie, the same thing happened. We were just soaking it in. Anyone who has watched that movie notices the same thing. When it comes on, it gets quiet. It’s a very powerful song.

My mum bought the 45 of ‘When Doves Cry’ and as the years went by, I kept hearing different joints off the album. Then in about ‘96 I found out something extra. I was at a rave party and one of the guys played ‘When Doves Cry’. I’d never heard someone mix ‘When Doves Cry’ in one of those sessions. Then the next track he played behind it was something else electronic. That’s when I realised eighty-five percent of that album is pure dance music.
