I was in junior high school, about to go to senior, when I saw the video for ‘Looking At The Front Door’. Me and a couple of guys in the classroom, that’s all we could talk about, that song, Large Professor rapping, the two DJs scratching.
I started learning the lyrics to that song, then I bought the tape. But just before I bought the tape, I watched Boyz N The Hood, in which they play ‘Just A Friendly Game Of Baseball’. So I knew two tracks. The good thing about cassette tapes was, if your song was at the end or in the middle, but not the first, you listened to every song, front and back. That’s how I heard ‘Peace Is Not The Word To Play With’. The message of that song, about the misrepresentation of words, stuck with me.
As the saying goes, be slow to speak and quick to listen. Step back, gather your thoughts, understand what it is that you hear. When it comes out of your mouth, understand what a word is. You have to be part of that word and it has to show in time you know what you’re saying. If I can’t represent peace, why should I talk about it? That’s the meaning of the saying, a man stands on his word.
