Artists discuss the 13 records that shaped their lives

11. CajmerePercolator

Everybody in Chicago just lost their mind, went nuts when this came out. It was a never-before-heard sound. I was in a dance group at the time, Mega Move. We used to do a dance off it. It made me get up and move around, it made people have a good time. It will always be a Chicago classic.

Before it came out, I was with a friend and he asked me if I’d ever heard Cajmere’s ‘Keep Moving’. That was the intro for ‘Percolator’ to come. He was building up to it, because ‘Keep Moving’ was a bit slower, but it had those sounds that he made into ‘Percolator’.

Then when I’d heard ‘Percolator’, I was at a friend of mine’s house and he told me: I’ve got this record that Cajmere’s made of the ‘Percolator’, but it’s a different version. When I heard that I said, ‘What is this?’ It was the actual ‘Percolator’, but the one everyone plays here in the States is called ‘Coffee Pot (Percolator Mix)’. The one he did before that though, the original after ‘Keep Moving’, is just called ‘Coffee Pot’ and that bangs even harder.

After that it helped people create differently. Man, we got to come hard. It helped birth the future of footwork.

There are two types of dances: the Westside Percolator and the Southside Percolator. The Westside sees Cajmere more as a Southside producer. All it is, is a two-step, side to side with a dip. You have your elbows up, and as you dip to one side your lower shoulder pops out. It’s easy. But the Westside percolator, I call it an aerobics dance. It was funny. You didn’t have to move your feet. Then I saw it another Southside way that made it different, and that was with House-O-Matics. They added a lot of energy, took it and made it their own. Anything they did, they enhanced it.
