Baker's Dozen

Artists discuss the 13 records that shaped their lives

8. Herbie HancockMwandishi

Mwandishi is another one that we bought in New Orleans. I know it’s got nothing to do with New Orleans, but the music is really well suited to those really hot, heavy days where you’re sitting at home and the sweat’s just pouring off you. Even then, and I know jazz has developed and changed [since its origins in New Orleans], but I don’t know if you can entirely take New Orleans out of jazz, even if it doesn’t sound anything like New Orleans trad jazz at all.
