Look into the Shadows: Peter Murphy’s Favourite Albums

Baker's Dozen

Artists discuss the 13 records that shaped their lives

2. Led ZeppelinLed Zeppelin

What can I say? Zeppelin’s first album, that was raw, wasn’t it? Not subtle in the slightest. It hit like a hammer, but it was sharp and they had control. That’s what stood out to me: the power wasn’t messy, it was focused. Page knew exactly what he was doing with that guitar, it was layered, produced with intention. And of course Robert Plant’s voice! He sang like someone possessed, like a preacher at the edge of something. They took something rooted in tradition and pushed it into new territory. That’s probably what I respected most about it. I never saw them play live but from what I have seen on film, they walked out on stage like they owned the place. You can’t fake that.
