12. Nusrat Fateh Ali KhanMusst Musst

When I first heard this, it wasn’t just music, it was devotion. If I am not mistaken, ‘Mustt Mustt’ was the first single in Urdu to have reached the British charts. It’s one of the best albums to have come out of Peter Gabriel’s Real World records. What a divine voice, what power and depth. It doesn’t ask you to listen, it kind of demands it. It reaches something ancient, something far beyond genre. You don’t need to understand the language to understand what he’s singing about, you feel it. It became our family’s music, and we listened to it with our kids when they were small and danced together.
