Baker's Dozen

Artists discuss the 13 records that shaped their lives

4. ScarletSomething To Lust About

JR: This is one band Arthur can’t stand. That’s why I picked it. He thinks they’re shit, and I can see why, but I’m not just picking stuff that I think is the best music ever. I’ve picked stuff that really touched me and developed me as a producer. I was also a bit ‘eurgh’ at first, but then they released an album – I can’t remember which one but it wasn’t this one – and it was so atonal and obviously obnoxious. They were like a more horrible sounding Dillinger Escape Plan, and I was really into Dillinger in the beginning. So I really enjoyed it. I still do, to be honest. I don’t know if pioneers is the right word, but they were certainly doing something new. I saw them live and bought this EP there. As with any of these records I was going in [to rehearsals] and telling the guitarist ‘Play the wrong notes!’ I liked trying to be as obnoxious and heavy as possible. That was my thing at the time. I just tried to evoke some kind of energy like these bands did.
