I loved two people in my lifetime. The first was Ewan McColl whom I loved, absolutely, dearly, we had three children and we had a fantastically productive and interesting life. I loved him, but I wasn’t in love with him, it was never that in love thing. The year before he died, I fell passionately in love with my one and only friend Irene Scott, now Irene Pyper Scott and it reminded me of tha line in Paul Simon, where he says, ‘Delores, my love for you is so deep, I feel I’ll disappear’. I didn’t disappear, I just went entirely into my body. She was married, and I was married, and it was a clandestine love affair, or so we thought.
She was shopping with her husband and this track came on. She just went to a peroxisome of love. She called me up and said, ‘Listen to this,’ and I held up the phone. I only listen to this when I want to just disappear into whatever I’m doing. I don’t listen closely to this album like I do the others, I just let it fill the background.
