Baker's Dozen

Artists discuss the 13 records that shaped their lives

6. The PretendersPretenders

Again. Yeah, Pretenders. It’s like Chrissie Hynde just has that voice that’s just super sexy and super cunt. It’s just like, ‘fuck you’. It inspired my sort of rap-speak-sing voice where it’s not like you can’t sing, it’s still singing, but there’s just this kind of delivery where you don’t think about it as singing. Just think about the lyrics. I love ‘Tattooed Love Boys’ where she’s talking about, “I shot my mouth off, and you showed me what that hole was for”. What the… wow. Or ‘Precious’ and “yeah, but not me baby, I’m too precious. I had to fuck off”. Just all this bravado. But then also these vulnerable songs too, like ‘Kid’ and ‘Stop Your Sobbing’.
