Baker's Dozen

Artists discuss the 13 records that shaped their lives

11. Stevie WonderTalking Book

In 1972 when this came out, everyone was wearing kaftans and if you were black you were sticking corn rows in your hair and you’d have been listening to Marvin Gaye’s What’s Going On and John Lennon’s ‘Imagine’ and then along came Talking Book. It had this pop simplicity but was using synths in a way no one had used them before and it had really curious content, especially with ‘Superstition’. Then there were all these love songs on it – ‘I Believe (When I Fall In Love It Will Be Forever)’ and ‘You Are The Sunshine Of My Life’ and ‘Blame It On The Sun’ and the oestrogen was really flowing at that time.

Selected in other Baker’s Dozens: Weyes Blood, Fimber Bravo, Yusuf/Cat Stevens, George Clinton, Tom Jones
