10. The Rolling Stones Frank ZappaBeggars Banquet
When I was at school, you were either into The Beatles or the Rolling Stones and I never liked The Beatles. I didn’t like the way they looked or sounded, although I liked John Lennon but I always fancied Mick Jagger. He did come to The Selecter’s gig once and that night I cried off with a headache and went back to the hotel and never got to hang out. But Beggars Banquet is much thumbed in my collection. It is uniquely decadent. ‘Street Fighting Man’ and ‘Sympathy For The Devil’ are wonderful and ‘Factory Girl’ remains a huge favourite of mine. There is a verve and a fight in the sound of it and performance of it. It was always in the back of my mind to cover when I was singing folk but I could never master the chords.
