Artists discuss the 13 records that shaped their lives

11. RZAThe World According To RZA

Again, I was trying to pick a relatively recent record. I am a big one for listening to modern hip hop and although it is 13 or 14 years old, I really liked the idea. He went around Europe and spoke to people asking who the most promising hip hop or R&B artist they have got and worked with them. There is a bloke called Xavier Naidoo who is a German-American soul singer who sang on ‘I’ve Never Seen’. He worked with Saian Supa Crew as well.

It was a great idea and his production, and anything Wu Tang connected, is always fantastic. Because he is working with so many different artists it is one of his best and most interesting. I did a bicycle tour of pubs – I think there have been artists in the punk era and since who used to pick local support artists and I do think it makes it more interesting. But this is not a style of record I could have made, I am not of that talent.
