Artists discuss the 13 records that shaped their lives

1. His Name Is AliveHome Is In Your Head

I grew up in Wandsworth, three roads away from the 4AD office. When I was 13 or 14 I started a fanzine and used to post letters saying, ‘Hey, can I have an interview with Kim Deal?’ I started to get free records from 4AD, and then when it came to my music later on I used to cover my demos in glitter and nail varnish and post them through the letterbox. It was my dream label because of this album. I got into The Amps first of all, and then when I went to record shops, I looked for anything that was on 4AD, and found His Name Is Alive, just from the front cover. Of course, because there was no internet, I had absolutely no idea how to research who this was. It blew open the concept of what an album is meant to be. It’s got something like 25 songs and some of them are about 30 seconds long, the thing is meant to be listened to in one. This was really informative for what I would go on to do with Wind In The Wires. On my 16th birthday they were playing in the basement of Rough Trade in Covent Garden. I was, like, this is my moment, I’m so excited! I took the day off school for it but then had gastroenteritis the night before. I was projectile vomiting all day – lying in bed I felt like God had struck me down. It was the beginning of my misfortune in life.
