Artists discuss the 13 records that shaped their lives

9. Trespassers WilliamDifferent Stars

There is an album that I love by a band called Trespassers William. I’ve not heard that many people mention them. If you listen to a lot of movies you’ll probably hear the band, Cigarettes after Sex. Nice enough sounding but a bit straight for me. Funnily enough I actually thought they [Cigarettes after Sex] had a woman singer and when the fella walked on with his big beard and a moustache I nearly fell over! The reason I mention them is that, maybe ten, fifteen years before them was a band called Trespassers William, from the US. They’d also done a cover of Ride’s ‘Vapour Trail’. How the hell do you cover that? Why? The original was kinda perfect for what it was. But their version is totally different enough to be a fabulous piece of music. You know those bands you come across in your life that make you think, “why doesn’t everyone just love you?” There are plenty of those of course. Nobody that I knew knew about Trespassers William. It’s beautiful and romantic music. If you need a song or two for someone you miss in this world, someone you may not see again, I’d recommend this band.
