Baker's Dozen

Artists discuss the 13 records that shaped their lives

3. Admiral AngryBuster

JA: Ridiculous band name, but they’ve pretty much got the sickest bass tone, and very fast, very groovy. Very aggressive, and they only really did Buster. There’s a record called Albania but all the songs are untitled and it’s ‘technically unreleased’.

JB: I think their guitar player died, unfortunately, so they now do a band called Black Sheep Wool who are very, very heavy. I remember hearing the Admiral Angry bassist and being astounded, thinking: ‘What the fuck kind of gauge does this guy use? How does he get that much sustain?’ They’re really loud, and they have moments of nastiness where they’re horrible and grim-sounding, yet they’ve got this groovy vibe that’s a bit akin to some of those Sacramento bands like Deftones. It sounds wrong to put them together but in my mind Admiral Angry are a mix of Burning Witch and Deftones.

JA: They’ve changed a bit and had different vocalists, which is a funny one because not all bands can survive heavy line-up changes and continue without founding members. That said, Palehorse have had about ten different line-ups. A lot of bands can get away with it – Napalm Death. But I feel that if Don Dokken leaves Dokken then Dokken can’t really continue.

JB: Yeah, if Danzig leaves Danzig, it’s over. But you know what, take a band like Lynyrd Skynyrd. They had that southern sound nailed down with three guitar players who are like virtuosos, and half of them got killed in a plane crash. But they’re still going today! Who’s possibly left in Lynyrd Skynyrd? That to me seems weird. I wouldn’t go to see them if they were on tour. That’s not Lynyrd Skynyrd.
