Baker's Dozen

Artists discuss the 13 records that shaped their lives

1. KsiężycRabbit Eclipse

Księżyc is Polish for moon. This record was played for me by my friend Sam in Islington Mill but I first heard them on a Blackest Ever Black compilation tape and fell in love with the music. I eventually found the record when I was doing a show at Cafe OTO, I brought it home and this record just soundtracked my life for months. You know when you find one of those albums that soundtrack everything for two or three months? I was completely immersed in this group’s world. The lead vocals, the drone quality, the structure of the tracks, it’s all just perfect and from listening to this I thought ‘I have to witness this live’ – I’ve still not seen this live, unfortunately, but there’s this Boiler Room performance they did where you get to see the dynamic between the group – the two vocalists in particular – and it really comes across as this ritualistic spell casting. The two ladies who sing are sitting at this table mixing some strange looking drinks and sharing them with each other, and it’s quite theatrical and definitely feels like there’s something deeper going on… I don’t want to get too technical on it, but the instrumentation, the vocals, there’s a timeless quality to it. It’s just a beautiful record.
