Baker's Dozen

Artists discuss the 13 records that shaped their lives

12. Que Vola?S/T

This is a new release on your French label No Format Yes, worked on my album Mogoya with No Format, which was an experiment that turned into a masterstroke. I saw that people all over the world liked it. It’s great to work with the people at No Format because they found a way to help my music evolve without disturbing its essence too much, my tradition. When you hear it you know it’s Oumou Sanagaré, whereas with some people you could get lost and it’s not you anymore. And the album was really acclaimed in Africa.

And you discovered this group through the label?

Yes it’s Franco-Cuban, it makes for a great mix. It was a discovery for me – I know rumba music but this was something new for me.
