Artists discuss the 13 records that shaped their lives

5. Justin TimberlakeJustified

I hate it when people have all these expectations about what I listen to, that I must be a really sad person because I make really sad music. I’m actually a huge pop fan. I would even say that his second record is even more of a favourite than this one, but this record was more important to me, and to the pop world. It was just good pop. When it came out, there wasn’t any good pop. It was really crappy pop at that time, and then he made the record and we had good pop for three years, and now we have bad pop again. I could have also put Michael Jackson in here, and Prince, but to me personally the Justin stuff has always been more important. I heard ‘Senorita’ in a club the other day. It was great! Have I heard the new stuff? I really like the first single, ‘Suit & Tie’. The second single, I loved how it was one of these two part songs, where he has a song and then a three minute outro which is kind of a different song. I loved the outro, but the song I was not too much into. But it’s not a bad pop song. Still better than most of the stuff out there at the moment. I’ll tell you what, though: the new Destiny’s Child single is one of the best pop songs in years.
