Artists discuss the 13 records that shaped their lives

6. PixiesDoolittle

This is a record that I’ve been listening to since I was 16. It’s hard to deny its prevalence in my life. I feel like I talk about it all the time, but the track ‘Hey’ really stuck with me when I first heard it. It made me understand who I was a bit more as a writer and songwriter. I remember thinking, ‘OK, there are other people out there who have these strange ideas, but it makes total sense.’ That was very refreshing because it made me realise that you can do what you want in songs. There’s no rule book, and nothing needs to sound a certain way, or nothing needs to sound very clever. You can do what you want, you can come up with a really good, simple idea and add a couple of things to it and strengthen it.

Doolittle made a big impression on me. It’s all great to listen to. Weirdly, I did a cover of ‘Hey’, it was the first song that I released when I was 21. Bullion, the producer, and I have done a lot of work together over the years, but that was the first thing we did together and it ended up being my first release. That’s another song that feels part of my life.

Selected in other Baker’s Dozens: Colin Stetson, Tim Booth, Nancy Whang
