Artists discuss the 13 records that shaped their lives

8. Miles DavisBitches Brew

Again, I bought a copy of this in India. I saw Miles Davis at the Isle of Wight Festival and he was playing the Bitches Brew stuff. He did his set, one long track, and people were asking what was that? And his response was, call it what you like. He was playing with Chick Corea, Jack DeJohnette and Dave Holland. It was really exciting. I think he came and watched us playing. We were playing really free music and I think he liked that. I loved the Bitches Brew era as well, because it was a complete turn around from everything he had been doing previously. You know Birth Of The Cool and the stuff he did with Gil Evans. It’s expressionist music really, but it’s all very clever, very simple yet also complex as well. At the time, I’d been listening to lots of his other stuff and I found the change to the new stuff really exciting. More recently I picked it up again. I used to listen to Live-Evil a lot too. So adventurous and so groundbreaking. Bitches Brew is about all I listen to now.
