He picks different instruments to go for – I think the last album was based on piano – but I really like the one that’s based around guitar. It’s minimal, but there’s a slight melody in what he does, it’s very hushy and fragile, loops. It’s very atmospheric, and simple, and it’s one of those records where you ask ‘did he get up in the morning and just make it in a day? Or is a record that he slaved over and worked really hard on writing the score, meticulously looking at every single note. Then it’s improvised, so how did that moment happen? I like hearing captured moments of improvisation, and usually it’s more with a number of musicians, but this with him on his own, is very vulnerable and it’s a beautiful piece.
