As soon as you hear ‘Paratrooper’ you think ‘oh my God, the world has frozen over’. Being interested in deconstructing guitar, it gets to that darkness more so than anything I’d heard before. I think something about strings – it can get to that level of darkness. If you’re just using electronics and you’re trying to make something sound dark, it doesn’t really do it as well as the strings, because strings are more organic and it feels more natural. Putting strings together with Peter Rehberg’s electronics, and not having anything to do with beats, it’s all about atmosphere. It’s something I can listen to again and again. When you’ve got that record on loud it’s the most frightening thing, and you can feel as well as hear it. It propels this really crazy energy, I find it really powerful and it’s got this real strength to it, especially when it’s on loud.
