Baker's Dozen

Artists discuss the 13 records that shaped their lives

2. Marvin GayeWhat’s Going On

This one will always be on my list. I think it’s impossible to choose a favourite track, well for me anyway, but a favourite album I can choose, simply because it never tells me when I need to listen to it, it works every time I hear it and it’s a movie – a sonic movie. I’m sure you’ve had a few people selecting it before. For me it’s just a masterpiece. It’s about 40 minutes of an unbelievably timeless message, but it’s so cinematic as well. It was recorded straight through. Even the segue ways are incredible. The lyrics are still so relevant today. Y’know, the whole composition… To get a message across that’s so strong, but to still have all this beauty within it is an amazing thing. Even though it’s depicting the darker side of human behaviour of those times it’s still such a beautiful album. It’s not only in my Baker’s Dozen – it’s my favourite album of all time.
