Artists discuss the 13 records that shaped their lives

10. Tony DMusic Makes You Move

This is a pretty rare album. Tony D was a beatmaker from the late-80s up until the early-2000s. He’s passed away now, in a car accident. His sampling technique was really something special. He was actually ripped off by Naughty By Nature on the track that made them big, ‘O.P.P.’ – they used a Jackson 5 sample, but that whole beat and selection of samples was Tony D. That was ripped off this album and they never paid any dues to him for the arrangement. There are so many gems on this album. The 45 King as a beatmaker was definitely a mentor to me, Marley Marl was a mentor too. But then there are certain producers that just do the sample-based thing, like Tony D. He has worked with MCs and that, but his art form is sampling – how to create a collage with samples. There’s loads of rare, rare samples in there – one for the beat collectors.
