Baker's Dozen

Artists discuss the 13 records that shaped their lives

6. Daniel JohnstonRejected Unknown

These are just the most beautiful love songs. Y’know the first song [‘Impossible Love’] where he’s just singing all sad and then the saxophones come in. You think the song is over and then a whole new part comes in and you’re thinking ‘alright Daniel Johnston take it to the hoop!’. You have some of the most beautiful moments on here. He writes odd songs but he speaks very simply, like he can do the thing that Hank Williams can do. He’s talking about love and ‘oh, this hurts’ and if you don’t do that shit just right it just sounds really dull and cliché, but he can break your heart.
