7. KraftwerkThe Man-Machine
I could choose many Kraftwerk albums. I’m looking at these albums and their influence as a selection that really stands out, not just tracks but whole albums. This was the first album that sounded complete. The time that I had experienced that before was Roxy Music’s first album. I heard this on a cassette and then bought the album. I was listening to it just this morning. I saw them across many decades and also at Hammersmith Palais with all their names in neon in front of their keyboards. That was a wonderful gig.
I will never ever tire of listening to that album. If I had to save one track? It would be ‘Spacelab’. I love the use of the vocoder on it. It would be easy to go with ‘The Model’ or something like that. One of the most beautiful song on it is ‘Neon Lights’. I’d be torn between ‘Spacelab’ and ‘Neon Lights’. There’s something about ‘The Model’ that made me question how it was written. There’s something that makes that track stand out in a pop sense. All the other ones are just so Kraftwerk; that one stands out and there’s that synth line.
