Baker's Dozen

Artists discuss the 13 records that shaped their lives

1. Pere UbuThe Modern Dance

It was early days for me and Stephen [Luscombe, co-founder of Blancmange]. We were just starting to do music. We went round to his and got listening to this album. I’ve got a limited edition copy and it still gets played. There’s a track on there called ‘Non-Alignment Pact’ that made me need to go and see them.

I met my partner who I’m still with and it’s wonderful. I went with her – it was our first date – down to the King’s Road, I got her a ring and proposed. Then I blagged into the gig at the Electric Ballroom. Pere Ubu were headlining with Gang Of Four supporting. The synth was such an amazing texture. There was Dave Thomas hitting a piece of metal with a hammer. It was incredible. I’ve seen him over the years and he still wears the bib but now it has contact mics built into it.

That album doesn’t have a bad track on it. Anybody should give it a listen. I can certainly say it was an incredible marker for me.
