Baker's Dozen

Artists discuss the 13 records that shaped their lives

8. Tod DockstaderQuatermass

Tod! Oh man. The guy is just incredible. I’ve always looked at European electronic music as kind of futurist music, a looking to forget the past, where American music is rebelling against the present. Dockstader was self-taught, and I automatically relate to that, but in his work, he heard the futurist shit and was like, no, this is happening now, and this is my reaction to what Stockhausen is doing.

There’s something rebellious about his music, and resourceful, the making do with whatever is around you, and being inspired by other musicians but not letting that guide where you’re going. I very much relate to that with my own music.
