7. Chance The Rapper, Donnie Trumpet & The Social Experiment‘Sunday Candy’
My first real understanding of how a younger, burgeoning set of rappers were forming these left-field collectives in certain geographic regions. As in the case of Odd Future, which is probably my favorite all-time modern collective, this Chicago version was breaking barriers left and right – mixing up expectations, instrumentation and themes, and just broadening the spectrum of how we experience the genre. This song extols the family and the idea of how community is family. The church we call ’grandmother’ who sits above all, watches from her perch and keeps an eye on the young ones from faltering. A life-affirming theme.
