Artists discuss the 13 records that shaped their lives

13. Fingers Inc.Another Side

Like many young Mancunians in the late 80s, I religiously tuned in to Stu Allan’s weekly show on Piccadilly Radio, where he played the latest soul, dance, hip-hop and house releases. House-wise, Larry Heard and Robert Owens’ Trax releases always had something about them, a very accomplished, musical sound without sounding too clean, or losing any of the robotic, alien oddness that other, rawer house releases had. I remember buying this from Spin Inn in Manchester when I was 16. They did a PA in the tiny record store, which spilled out into the precinct. Fingers, Inc. was Larry Heard (Mr. Fingers) with vocalists Robert Owens and Ron Wilson. In my mind, the first proper house music album, and one that has never been bettered for quality and consistency. I was fortunate enough to work with Robert Owens last year.
