It’s all too easy to forget that, as well as being one of the most enigmatic figures in English music of the past three decades, Steven Patrick Morrissey is at heart a music fan like you and I. Behind the wonderfully worded barbs in the music press and that singular sound and aesthetic that he’s carved out for himself over the years, there lies a hungry pair of ears. One hardly need recount all the evidence for this: the youthful letters to the music press, the cover of Suede’s ‘My Insatiable One’ in the early 90s, his occasional presence in the crowd of tiny backroom gigs. But sometimes it’s nice to know the specifics, so, to celebrate the announcement of the reissue of Bona Drag and ‘Everyday Is Like Sunday’ this autumn, we’ve the definitive list of Morrissey’s favourite 13 albums, with sleeves scanned by The Man Himself.
