Artists discuss the 13 records that shaped their lives

11. ParliamentMothership Connection

This was another record from the time I was graduating from high school. Bootsy Collins was a massive influence on my sound. I loved his bass – how he made bass sound more like fuck-noises and less like jazz-fusion badge-buffing (i.e. self-congratulatory/ego-boosting grandstanding), but I also loved his role in the band: how that even though his bass style was so signature he made it so that it never dominated the aesthetic and was always in service to the song. And it was also incredible the way he finessed envelope filter.
