Artists discuss the 13 records that shaped their lives

6. Tom Petty And The HeartbreakersDamn The Torpedoes

A few years after I stopped listening to metal and got turned on to alternative rock and punk rock, I got into Tom Petty, who is arguably my favourite artist. He has such a great voice. He’s a great guitar player, too, and this is an amazing-sounding record. This album has one of my favourite Petty songs, ‘Listen To Her Heart’. He sings, “You think you’re going to take her away, with your money and your cocaine…” What a great fucking band. Do you remember him playing with Bob Dylan and Roy Orbison in the Traveling Wilburys, too? That was a big moment for them, a great little feather in their cap. It’s funny, when you look at the pictures of them from back then, they’re all aged like 42 or 49 or whatever, and yet they looked so old at the time. You end up going, how is this possible?
