4. The Rolling Stones Frank ZappaAftermath
My father worked for Lufthansa, so when The Rolling Stones came to Dusseldorf in, I think 1965, I was allowed to go straight up to the plane with some representatives from the airline. My heroes walked right past me! There was an incident that happened a few minutes later, maybe a thousand fans went across the fences and rushed to the airfield and the police started trying to disperse them with water cannons. While they chased these fans around, I was standing next to the gear used to tow airplanes and there were fans standing on top of it, and when they jumped off of it something crashed down on me and broke my toe. The nail had to be removed, so it’s a painful memory really!
I was also a really big fan of some of those songs they did. I recently listened to ‘The Last Time’ by The Rolling Stones. There’s this amazing guitar riff, this sound that Phil Spector created for Brian Jones, it’s so amazing. It had such huge influence on my thinking about music and for the first few years we were really happy to try and create and recreate that music, to try and come close to that sound.
