Baker's Dozen

Artists discuss the 13 records that shaped their lives

12. PrinceSign “O” The Times

Each one of the albums on this list meant something to me at a particular time. When I was listening to Sign "O" The Times I was going through a transformation in my life, where a lot of things were happening. The Paleys were coming to an end, it was just before Shack, and I didn’t know where the band was going to go. It was an important album for me at that time, lyrically, the playing on it, and Prince himself. And that [title track] ‘Sign "O" The Times’ is just beautiful. I used to pick my daughter up to take her to school on my bike, and I’d have it playing on my way back. It means a lot to me.

Someone asked us at Ghetto Records when we were doing [Shack’s debut album] Zilch, who do you want?’ We said, ‘Prince’. They said ‘No, come on, who do you want?’ We said, ‘No, really, see what you can do.’
