Artists discuss the 13 records that shaped their lives

10. Madonna – Ray Of Light

I’ve been a massive Madonna fan from day one. I was very influenced by Ray Of Light for Northern Star. I was listening to it a lot when I was going into the studio, and was lucky enough to work with many of the same people – William Orbit, Rick Knowles, Marius de Vries, Craig Armstrong did some strings as well. I think it’s a really beautiful album. It feels like she was in a really comfortable place and found some inner peace. The thing with Madonna is she’s a provocateur. She likes to shock and she’s always changing, like a chameleon, but I like to think this was her time. She’d just become a mum and it just felt very natural. She always had her finger on the pulse and worked with these really interesting people in a mainstream arena.
