Artists discuss the 13 records that shaped their lives

11. Mohamed Molo

He’s someone who really makes me laugh, in our language. When he’s describing a romantic situation, he’ll do the man’s voice, then the woman’s voice, and when he goes back to the man’s voice he switches to a different musical scale. He’s a genius, he has a great voice and he’s a comedian. It makes me laugh thinking about all the crazy stuff he does. If I go to a festival with my group he’ll come along with me, we’ll chat a lot, and he’s really funny. I like his personality even more than his music! When I listen to it, it makes me think about something he said that cracked me up.

He’s released music on Sahel Sounds too

Yes, and I am where I am today because of Sahel Sounds, because otherwise no-one in the West would even know I exist. We were getting bigger so we needed a bigger label. And we didn’t go looking for Matador, Matador came to us. They let us know they wanted to work with us and we accepted.
